“I would like to see young film-makers think about their projects on a global scale right from the very beginning, so that the films they create are universal and can conquer audiences not only in Poland, but also in Europe, and maybe even the whole world. We clearly have many talented people to be proud of. Film Lab Warszawa–Berlin was born to promote the work of the Warsaw’s film scene. Where else could we do so, if not during one of the most prestigious industry festivals and markets, EFM Berlinale?”—says the originator and co-ordinator of the program, Agnieszka Sękowska, the President of the Przestrzeń Filmowa foundation.

Film Lab Warszawa–Berlin has been the latest educational project of the Przestrzeń Filmowa foundation, carried out since December 2016. The foundation invited young film-makers from Warsaw who (have brought into existence at least two short films—out of which at least one, falling into the category of documentary, animated, or feature film, has already been presented on festivals) were planning to develop and finalise their first or second full-length film in the years 2017–2018 to participate in the program.  

Four of the best pitchers, selected by the Polish commission, were chosen to go to the 67. Berlinale and European Film Market a part of the 67 IFF Berlinale. to get a grasp of its behind the scenes. Everybody will also have the opportunity to talk to the film-makers from 10 to 15 February 2017.

But first, the initial selection was made by foreign judges: Alex Traila and Diane Malherbe.

“I’ve made every endeavour to ensure that the project would be truly international from its starting point. The jury comprising experienced experts, international festival selectors and industry consultants, guaranteed a fresh, independent look at the submitted ideas”—Sękowska explains.

The selected directors and producers participated in an intensive two-day pitching workshop with Aleksandra Leszczyńska, expert in development and financing of film projects and young film-makers’ coach.

As a high point of the workshop, the participants were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas to Polish industry professionals.

Renowned film producers, Stanisław Dziedzic and Zuzanna Król, together with the sales agent Katarzyna Siniarska listened to eight pitches, and chose four they thought were the best:

  • „Inwardness”, drama—pitched by Grzegorz Jaroszuk and Kamila Kuś

Logline: Inwardness is a journey of self-discovery in the course of which main character realizes that awareness only bring pain.

The project will be represented in Berlin by Grzegorz Jaroszuk.

  • „Arkadia Stadt”, sci-fi—pitched by Roman Przylipiak and Tomasz Morawski

Logline: A new Berlin Wall separates the rich from a wave of chaos and anarchy that has been flooding Europe.

Tomasz Morawski, producer, will go to the city of the Golden Bears.

  • „YouTuber”, mockumentary—pitched by Joanna Satanowska and Alicja Jagodzińska

Logline: While a chicken-hearted eternal student will do anything—including jumping off a skyscraper—just to become famous on YouTube, his witty sister thinks her celebrity-wannabe brother might be a topic better suited for her own documentary.

The producer, Alicja Jagodzińska, will promote their project in the German capital.

  • „Volterra”, drama—pitched by producer Marta Lewandowska, film directed by Jacek Borcuch. The project will be represented in Berlin by Marta Lewandowska.

Logline: Growing refugee crisis pushes Maria, nobel prize laureate and moral authority to make a controversial public statement, the consequences of which she would never have expected.

“Nowadays, self-promotion is key to everything. To achieve international success, apart from talent and knowledge, every author should get the chance to acquire theoretical and practical skills to find their way in the international world of co-producers, distributors, and sales agents. We provided our participants with professional knowledge and all the necessary tools to reach their goals.”— says Agnieszka Pyrkowska responsible for the promotional part of the project.

Theresa May's announcement of a "hard Brexit", Trump's victory in the presidential election and the strengthening of the radical right, the reluctance of European countries to work together in dealing with migration. It seems as if our society is losing a much-needed ability to collaborate.

That's why the 19th One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival wants to remind us of the value of collaborative effort and sharing. At a time of populist rhetoric, negative discussions on social networks and a flood of "fake news", collaboration is a positive way to respond to a divided society facing a crisis of values.

"Collaboration is mainly communication and sharing," said Hana Kulhánková, who is the director of the One World Festival. "We have become accustomed to the word share meaning quickly forwarding a post on Facebook that we did not even read properly. Let's go back to the original meaning of the word share. It means to give, to be willing to deny oneself something and consider the consequences of one's choices on others."

"Collaboration is not a given," she continued. "It's an ability that is gradually learned. Lately, however, collaboration has become an art that only a few have mastered."

The slogan of this year's festival campaign is The Art of Collaboration. It is a concept from the field of contemporary art, which has inspired One World and places it into a society-wide context. "We chose a very positive sounding slogan, because Czech society has for a long time been receiving rather negatively worded messages," Kulhánková said.

The festival campaign was prepared by the creative studio Ideamakers from Ústí nad Labem in collaboration with graphic designer Tomáš Trnobranský. "The fundamental idea behind the campaign is to understand the act of manual labour as a means of social interaction and socialising," said Miroslav Hašek of Ideamakers. "The ability of helping someone or let someone to help us, working together and collaborating is not something that we see as a moment of weakness, but as one of the crucial moments of survival."

Examples of collaboration or its absence can be seen across the whole festival programme, which this year includes over 110 films. This year's new categories are Vote for Change! focusing on populist movements and civil society activists who have brought the need for change into the political arena. Migration remains a major theme for videographers and filmmakers in the past year, and therefore another new programme category is Dreams of Europe – films about refugees on their way to Europe as well as those who, after encountering the European reality, awake from a naive dream. In collaboration with the reSITE architectural and urban platform, the Faces of the City category was created following the relationship between people and the urban environment. The Family Happiness category meanwhile presents the western family and its importance in an individualised society. Traditional programming categories will again include Who Is Normal Here?, So-called Civilisation, The Power of the Media, Panorama, and One World for Students and Docs for Kids. In a special screening, videos by Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty on the borders of reportage and short documentary will be presented.

One World this year also introduces a new Czech Competition category, which aims to promote the screening of Czech documentaries at international festivals, from among whom a jury will be selected in this competition category.

One World 2017 will be held from March 6 to 15 in Prague and then will visit 32 other cities in the Czech Republic and Brussels. The town of Semily has newly joined the festival family.

The festival programme and international guests will be introduced at a press conference on Tuesday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lucerna Gallery in Prague.

Four Georgian films have been selected to participate in one of the most prestigious film festivals around the world – the Berlin International Film Festival. This is the first time so many Georgian films have been screened at one of the world’s leading film festivals. The selected Georgian films will be screened as part of the following sections:

  • "My Happy Family" directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross (Polare Film) – Forum;
  • "City of the Sun" – a documentary directed by Rati Oneli (Oneli Film Association Ltd) – Forum;
  • "Hostages" directed by Rezo Gigineishvili (20 steps productions) – Panorama;
  • "Li.le" – an animated film directed by Natia Nikolashvili (20 steps productions) – Generation

The Georgian National Film Centre will present an exhibit stand of Georgia at the European Film Market organized within the frames of the Berlinale; and it is the 12thtime an exhibit stand of Georgia has been displayed at the European Film Market. 

It should also be noted that the focus of the Berlinale Co-Production Market this year is among others on Georgia; the Berlinale Co-Production Market is an event annually attended by about 600 leading filmmakers – film directors and producers from around the world. Through the brochures distributed among the guests, they will have an opportunity to get acquainted with the activities of the Georgian National Film Centre and raise awareness of the Georgian filmmaking industry.

Within the frames of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, the Georgian National Film Centre plans to organize a reception, enabling the guests to attend a presentation about the Georgian film industry and get acquainted with Georgia as an attractive location for filmmaking. In addition the guests will meet the crews of the Georgian films screened at the Berlinale and watch a promotional video about the Georgian film industry. 

Besides, Georgia will be one of the five countries chosen to participate in a special country session, where the participant countries, with the help of a moderator, will share their expertise and achievements in the field of filmmaking with the audience. 

And Finally, Georgia plans to organize an event within the Berlinale Film Festival and invite Georgian and foreign guests attending the Film Festival.

Krakow, 26th January 2017 – The final deadline for submitting films for 57th Krakow Film Festival is coming up – films can be submitted to the international competitions only till Tuesday, 31st January.

The organizers of Krakow Film Festival are waiting for documentary, animated and short film submissions to three international competitions of equal rank: Short Film Competition, Documentary Competition and DocFilmMusic Competition for music documentary films. In all three international competitions, a Polish première is required, while an international première is preferred.

  • In the Short Film Competition, feature, animated and documentary films with a running time of no more than 30 minutes compete for the Golden Dragon.
  • In the Documentary Competition, participate documentary films with a running time longer than 30 minutes, and the best of them gets the Golden Horn.
  • In the DocFilmMusic Competition, the Golden Heynal award goes to one of music documentary films with a running time of more than 50 minutes.

Krakow Film Festival is an Oscar® qualifying festival, nominates and recommends films for the European Film Award in short and documentary category. It has received also FIAPF accreditation. 57th Krakow Film Festival is held from 28 May to 4 June 2017. This year’s special guest at the Festival will be the cinematography of Germany.

Wishing on a star, an Italian, Austrian, Slovak documentary directed by Peter Kerekes, is the winner of the seventh edition of When East Meets West. The project tells the story of a peculiar astrologist who offers to her clients a simple, but effective way, to change their destiny by taking a trip, often to remote places, on the day of their birthday. Wishing on a star was honoured with the CNC Development Award (5.000 EUR cash prize) as the best of the 22 projects in competition by an international jury of experts consisting of Matthieu Darras (TorinoFilmLab), Marge Liiske (Industry@Tallinn/Baltic Event),  Nikolaj Nikitin (SOFA – School of Film Agents), Kristina Trapp (EAVE) and Marie Pierre Valle (Wild Bunch).

A grant for the participation in the EAVE European Producers Workshop goes to Austrian producer David Bohun (Mischief Film), whilst the Flow Postproduction Award, prize of 10.000 EUR in post-production facilities, goes to the Turkish project Zuhal produced by Anna Maria Aslanoglu (Istos Film) and directed by Nazli Elif Durlu. The TRL Espresso, automatic selection for MIA - New Cinema Network co-production market and also the Film London PFM in October 2017, goes to the Swedish project Madame Luna produced by David Herdies and Vicky Miha (Momento Film) and the Producers Network prize was awarded to the Georgian producer Tekla Machavariani (with the project Before Father is Back) and the Italian producer Cecilia Frugiuele (with the project Alfa). EWA Network Best Woman Director Award went to Michela Occhipinti, director of the Italian project Flesh Out.

Finally, an international jury composed by Rudy Buttignol (Knowledge Network), Catherine Le Clef (CAT&Docs) and Claudia Schreiner (MDR), has delivered the HBO Europe Award – in the work in progress section Last Stop Trieste – to the Serbian film In Praise of Nothing by Boris Mitic and the Flow Digital Cinema Award to the Polish documentary The Runners by Łukasz Borowski.

The seventh edition of WEMW ends with a series of impressive numbers: almost 300 submissions, over 40 different countries represented, 200 international decision makers, 400 registered participants and more than 500 one-to-one meetings.

WEMW is organized by the FVG Audiovisual Fund together with the Trieste Film Festival, in collaboration with EAVE, Maia Workshops, Creative Europe Desk Italy, EURIMAGES, and the support of Creative Europe/MEDIA Programme, MiBACT - Direzione Generale per il Cinema, CEI - Central European Initiative and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The 2017 focus is realized thanks to the support of CNC - Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, Estonian Film Institute, Lithuanian Film Centre and National Film Centre of Latvia, and the cooperation of the Creative Europe Desks of Estonia, France, Latvia and Lithuania.

The upcoming 24th MFFK Febiofest Bratislava will host a second edition of Industry Days: a bright new event that is dedicated to promotion of local production as well as to meetings of film professionals.

Apart from the traditional Works in Progress presentation of 10 upcoming Slovak films including minority co-productions, the event will host a panel discussion entitled „Slovakia – Austria: film neighbors“. The discussion should present the current state of the connection between these two countries that are sharing common borders but do not work together on co-productions as much as their closeness implies. We are going to discuss this issue with directors of national film funds and independent producers that are experienced in coproduction between these two countries.

Both events will take place in Cinema Lumiére in the very center of Bratislava on March 7. “Last year we had a very nice panel on cooperation between Slovak and Czech film industries and I am very happy that this year, with the support of new partners like FNE, we can finally start a dialogue with representatives of the Austrian film industry. It may seem strange that two countries so close to each other can cooperate on so many levels but there is still some kind of “iron curtain” between them when it comes to cinema. I am very happy that the dialogue that started two years ago at FNE Focus on Austrian Co-production: Things Have Changed! in Vienna can continue within the programme of MFFK Febiofest,” says Artistic Director of the festival and Industry Days organizer Premysl Martinek.

“I am happy that Febiofest has taken the initiative to move forward on the momentum created at the event FNE Focus on Austrian Co-production: Things Have Changed! that was co-organised by FNE and the Austrian Film Institute just over a year ago in Vienna where nearly 70 Austrian and CEE producers and industry professionals participated. This demonstrates the keen interest there is in to see more co-operation between Austria and CEE, ” Anna Franklin General Director, Film New Europe.

“Although Austria is our close neighbour, the co-operation between Austria and Slovakia has been scarce. Industry Days at MFFK Febiofest Bratislava 2017 are aimed at fostering possible future cooperation between these neighbouring countries, which can eventually, in the long run, prove to be vital for the audiovisual industries of both. I believe that the event has got potential to ignite a much needed spark of mutual cooperation and we will, hopefully, see more of coproduction projects in the years to come.” Rastislav Steranka, director of the National Cinematographic Centre at the Slovak Film Institute.

Works in Progress presentation is part of the festival for the third time. So far it has focused its attention on projects like Little Harbour (Berlinale Generation 2017), The Teacher (IFF Karlovy Vary 2016), Hotel Sunrise (IDFA Amsterdam 2016) among the others. The selection is open to a wide range of productions from animation to experimental films, from documentaries to features.

Another part of Industry Days is a masterclass on worldwide distribution of Slovak Oscar entry Eva Nová by Laurent Danielou from LOCO Film sales company, premiere of a new Slovak feature and of course the Industry Party. As the festival is organised by the Association of Film Clubs, there will be also a presentation of similar distribution entities from all over Europe.

Industry Days project is organised by MFFK Febiofest, Association of Slovak Film Clubs, Slovak Film Institute and Film New Europe. Partners of the event are Creative Europe Desk Slovakia and Creative Europe Desk Austria.

MFFK Febiofest was founded as a twin to its Czech version that is now the Prague International Film Festival Febiofest by the independent producer Fero Fenič. The festival is focused on contemporary and archive cinema with a special focus on auteur driven films and for four years already hosts a short film competition with the main award of 3000 € for the films coming from Visegrad countries and Austria. 

The film industry event Meeting Point – Vilnius also partnered with Cannes film festival. Three up-and-coming film projects from Vilnius Coming Soon session will be picked for Le Marché du Film screenings in Cannes. Project registration is open until February 20.
The European Film Forum (EFF) has already visited Cannes, Berlin, Venice and other major film festivals. In April 6 it will be held in Vilnius International Film Festival Kino Pavasaris. The forum will be a part of Meeting Point – Vilnius event (April 4-6). The special focus will be on young filmmakers from small cinema countries having bigger visibility in the European market.
Since its launch in 2015, the aim of the EFF has been to develop a strategic policy agenda to open up new perspectives on the challenges and opportunities brought about by the digital revolution. The forum is a platform for a structured dialogue between policy makers and the stakeholders in the audio-visual sector. The EFF was proposed by the European Commission in its 2014 Communication on European Film in the Digital Era.
Each year, the filmmakers participating in Meeting Point – Vilnius conference, present their up-and-coming films to industry professionals. Successful projects from previous sessions include Sundance winner Summer of Sangaile and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee Tangerines.
This year filmmakers from the Baltics, Eastern Europe and Central Europe will be eligible to present their first or second film in the Coming Soon New Talents session. Traditionally, a special session will be organised exclusively for the Baltic films to showcase the up and coming films from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

This year the projects will also compete for a special prize – Cannes Industry screening. An international jury will select three in-development films that will go to Cannes Le Marché du Film industry event where they will be screened in the section Goes to Cannes for film sales and distribution agents, as well as festival programmers.
For the three-day programme Meeting Point – Vilnius has established an advisory committee comprised of cinema experts: journalist and analyst Michael Gubbins (UK), film industry expert Marketa Hodouskova (France) and IFF Rotterdam representative Ludmila Cvikova.
Previous speakers of Meeting Point – Vilnius event include the Oscar winners director Michel Hazanavicius and sound engineer Chris Newman, acclaimed documentarist Joshua Oppenheimer.
Vilnius IFF will organise the European Film Forum together with the Lithuanian Film Centre and Creative Europe MEDIA desk.
