PÖFF 2012: European Film 2011 is "Melancholia"

    In the evening of 3 December 2011 at the European Film Awards gala in Berlin the award for best European Film was given to Danish director Lars von Trier’s "Melancholia", which also brought the European Cinematographer award to Manuel Alberto Claro and European Production Designer award to Jette Lehmann.

    "Melancholia" was screened as the opening film of tARTuFF festival in Tartu this summer and it was included in recent PÖFF programme. European Director award also went to Denmark, to Susanne Bier for "In A Better World", that was screened at PÖFF 2010 in the competition programme EurAsia. Colin Firth received European Actor award for his role in "The King’s Speech", the film itself got the People’s Choice Award for Best European Film.

    For her role in "We Need to Talk About Kevin", that was screened in PÖFF’s competition programme EurAsia, Tilda Swinton was given European Actress award. From other films in this year’s PÖFF programme Ludovic Bource received European Composer award for music in "The Artist" and Brothers Dardenne for best screenplay in "The Kid with a Bike". The European Discovery award went to "Oxygen" which PÖFF screened in 2010.

    Last year the European Film Awards 2010 gala took place in Tallinn at the end of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
