Ljubljana film festival opens November 12

    For twelve days, between Wednesday 12 and Sunday 23 November 2008, Ljubljana and Maribor will play host to the highest achievements of world cinema.

    For the nineteenth autumn, LIFFe will traditionally offer the most recent films from all over the world, foremost festival winners (Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam...), the idiosyncratic poetics of various auteurs, tributes to several filmmakers, as well as insights into some of the most compelling national productions.

    Festival awards: Kingfisher, presented by Mobitel, is given to best young director featured in the Perspectives. Donor Tobacna Ljubljana will bestow the Dragon Award to a film who has not yet been purchased for Slovenian distribution. The international jury of the International Federation of Film Critics, awards the FIPRESCI Prize, while this year's novelty is the Best Short Film Award, offered by Apple VAD Slovenia.

    Films from five continents are to be screened in Cankarjev dom: Linhart and Kosovel Hall; Komuna Cinema, Kinoklub Vič, Kinodvor and Hall 5 of Kolosej Maribor.

    Annually, the Festival hosts over sixty guests, directors, actors, screenwriters and producers, who address the audiences before the screenings of their films and chat with them at the after-screening talks. Confirmed arrives: Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Carlos Reygadas, Erick Zonca, Bruce laBruce and others.


    Between 20 and 22 November, within the scope of the accompanying programme, film aficionados will be able to attend the traditional Autumn Film School, in association with LIFFe organised by KINO! and Ekran magazines. There will be a scriptwriting workshop on 14 November, organised by LIFFe in conjunction with MEDIA desk Slovenia, RTVS, Let's Script a Film Initiative and Študentska založba Publishing House. The overview of Catalan Cinema will be accompanied by a poster exhibition, held at the Festival Centre in the 2nd Foyer of Cankarjev dom throughout the Festival.
