POLISH FILM SEASON IN BRAZIL

POLISH FILM SEASON IN BRAZIL starts February 10th.

It is the first time such a fur-flung promotion of Polish cinema is organized in Latin America. The Season is going to take place in 10 cities – from equatorial Belém, through Salvador, Palmas, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba, Florianópolis, down to Porto Alegre – with 14 films to be shown in multiple screenings. The aim of the event is to present the latest Polish film productions – most of which will be shown in Brazil for the first time – as well as retrospective of Polish classic movies, all this as a part of the 100 year anniversary of the first Polish feature film celebrations started last year in October. The chosen pictures represent various film genres. The oldest one is A Strong Man (Mocny człowiek, 1929), by Henryk Szaro and the latest – a comedy by Tomasz Konecki, Laydies (Lejdis, 2008). The rest of the collection consists of movies by eminent Polish filmmakers, including Janusz Morgenstern (Good Bye, Till Tomorrow; Do widzenia, do jutra, 1960), Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Pharaoh; Faraon, 1965), Andrzej Wajda (Promised Land; Ziemia obiecana, 1974), Janusz Majewski (Hotel Pacific; Zaklęte rewiry, 1975), Krzysztof Zanussi (Camouflage; Barwy ochronne, 1976), Ryszard Bugajski (Interrogation; Przesłuchanie, 1982), Juliusz Machulski (Sexmission; Seksmisja, 1983), Feliks Falk (The Collector; Komornik, 2005), Jan Jakub Kolski (Jasminum, 2005), Krzysztof Krauze (The Debt; Dług, 1999) and – together with – Joanna Kos-Krauze (Saviour Square, Plac Zbawiciela, 2006). Polish cinematography has been highly appreciated and enjoyed great prestige in Brazil for many years. Unfortunately, the knowledge of Polish cinema found its conclusion with film productions from the 80s. Hence the decision to organize again, after an interval, a large scale presentation of Polish cinematography in this region, to show its diversity and variety. What is new this time – a key issue in terms of Brazilian filmgoers – are Brazilian Portuguese subtitles to all the movies, elaborated by qualified translators, experts not only in the language, but also in Brazilian reality. Therefore the understanding of Polish cinema should be undoubtedly much better than before. Up to this time Polish movies were screened with English subtitles, the fact that narrowed down the audience only to English speaking viewers. POLISH FILM SEASON IN BRASIL will last until the end of June. The organizers of the event are: Polish Film Institute, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Polish Embassy in Brazil and AP MAÑANA.
