Festival: Krisztina Esztergályos wins Silver Leopard in Locarno

The Variations, a 28 minute diploma short from director Krisztina Esztergályos has won the Silver Leopard in Locarno.

The decision of the jury (Céline Bolomey, Denis Delcampe, Maike Mia Höne, Najwa Najjar, Adrian Sitaru) was celebrated by 10,000 festival visitors in Piazza Grande, Locarno.

The film is about variations of relationships in an abandoned 1980's era block-house hotel at New Years Eve. The film is a co-production of University of Theatre, Film and Television (http://engine.szinhaz.hu) and Cinema Film (www.cinemafilm.hu), under producers Miklós Bosnyák and Gábor Garami.

Esztergályos originally intended to make an adaptation of an American novel, but she couldn't obtain the rights. As she was making journeys to the shore of Lake Balaton, she discovered the hotel which inspired her to write a new story. The shooting took place in winter, and the hotel was opened especially for the film.
