{mosimage}Tomek is an ordinary teenager living near the Polish-German border. In search of easy cash, he lets himself be dragged into the world of youth prostitution. The "piggies" from the title of the film are young boys who sell themselves to German paedophiles. Gliński presents young people who are devoid of moral guidelines, disappointed with the church and looking for their path in the darkness.
"They drink in novelties, they are learning of a world after the transformation of the system," says Gliński. "Very often, they are not able to resist the temptation of money and the illusive happiness which is supposed to be brought by luxury."
The director of the film and the president of the Łódź Film School (www.filmschool.lodz.pl/) had already dealt with the subject of difficult young people in his film Hi, Tereska, showered with awards (among others special jury award at the Karlovy Vary Festival).
The film is a Polish-German co-production produced by WIDARK - Produkcja Filmowa i Telewizyjna Sp. z o.o. (www.widmark.com) and German co-producer 42film GmbH (www.42film.de). The total budget amounted to PLN 3,898,100 with funding from Mitteldeutsche Medienforderung ( www.mdm.online.de). The Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) supported the production with PLN 60,000 during the stage of development and with PLN 1,950,000 at the production stage. The shooting lasted from June 28 to July 26, 2008 in Gubin and Lednica.
Piggies premiered in the main competition at the Karlovy Vary Festival and left the Czech Republic with a special award for Filip Garbacz, an untrained actor playing the main role.
