50th KRAKOW FILM FESTIVAL JURY

    DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION JURY

    Marian Marzyński - Chairman (Poland/USA)

    A documentary film director whose film "Return of the Ship" was a double winner in Krakow in 1964, honoured with the Golden Dragon and the Golden Hobby Horse. Two years later "Before the Tournament" received the Silver Dragon and the Bronze Hobby Horse and in 1967 To Be won - the Silver Dragon. For the past 40 years he has worked as a documentary film director for PBS, American public television. Marzyński has received an EMMY and many other prestigious awards for, among others, his film Shtetl. In the 1960s in Poland he made popular TV programmes such as "Wszyscy jesteśmy sędziami" (We Are All Judges) and "Turniej miast" (Tournament of Cities) Marzynski lives in Boston and Miami.

    Nati Baratz (Israel)

    A writer, director and producer who was born in Jerusalem. Baratz has been working as a freelance director and producer since he graduated from the Film School of Tel-Aviv University in 2000. His most notable short documentaries include Tel "Aviv-Kyrgyzstan" (2001) and "Noches" (2004). "Unmistaken Child" (2008), his first feature-length documentary, won more than 19 awards and was acclaimed by many critics. He is currently working on three new feature documentaries, "Meal", "Three Last Breaths" and "Gaza Rashomon".

    Martichka Bozhilova (Bulgaria)

    She has been a producer of AGITPROP since 1999. Her films include award-winning "Georgi and the Butterflies", "The Mosquito Problem and other stories", "Corridor #8", as well as "15" and "See You at the Eiffel Tower". In 2006 she received the International Trailblazer Award, launched by Robert Redford and Sundance Channel at MIPDOC in Cannes. Bozhilova is a director of the Balkan Documentary Center based in Sofia and works as a lecturer at various European workshops and events related to the documentary cinema. She is an official representative of the European Documentary Network (EDN) in Bulgaria.

    Grażyna Torbicka (Poland)

    Journalist, television presenter. Graduated from Warsaw Academy of Dramatic Arts. She started work at the Polish Television in 1983, debuting in "Sports Sunday". Two years later she hosted the International Song Festival in Sopot. The author - together with Tadeusz Sobolewski of the popular TV programme "Kocham kino" (I Love the Cinema). Since 1996, a member of FIPRESCI. The winner of Wiktor, three times winner of Telekamery, awarded with the Gloria Artis medal - Polish Culture Merit. Artistic Director of Art and Film Festival "Dwa Brzegi" ("Two Shores") in Kazimierz Dolny.

    SHORT FILM COMPETITION JURY

    Krzysztof Zanussi - Chairman (Poland)

    Director, screenwriter and film producer as well as theatre director and teacher. He studied Physics at Warsaw University (1955-59) and Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University (1959-62). A graduate of the Film School in Łódź (1967), since the 1980s he has been associated with the Tor Film Studio, first as an artistic director and then a general director. In 1971-83 he was the deputy head of the Association of Polish Filmmakers and in 1975-77 the head of the Polish Federation of Film Clubs. In 1987 Zanussi became a member of the State Committee for Cinematography. He works as a film teacher at a number of film schools all over the world. Zanussi has received many prestigious awards and distinctions. He is a member of the European Film Academy.

    Borys Lankosz (Poland)

    Borys Lankosz is a film director, a graduate of the Film School in Łódź. He is the creator of the documentary series "From a Different Angle" and the film "Poles, Poles". His short film "Alien VI" won the Silver Phoenix of the Jewish Motifs - Warsaw International Film Festival in 2008. "Radegast", a documentary, received the same prize in this category one year later. "Reverse" (2009), his first feature film, won 11 awards at the Polish Film Festival and was Poland's official submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Just recently, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has held exclusive screenings of "Reverse".

    Georgi Lazarevski (France)

    He graduated from the Louis Lumiere National Cinema School in Paris in 1989. He has worked as a freelance photographer, especially involved with humanitarian organizations in Sarajevo, Bagdad and Mali, as well as a cinematographer and second unit DPO on several feature films, such as "Entre les murs", a 2008 award winner from Cannes. He directed his first documentary, "Voyage en sol majeur", in 2006 and won awards at numerous international festivals. With "This way up" he carries on his central theme revealing distinctive characters in their struggle to escape their condition. He is member of ACID and Signatures.

    Todd Luoto (USA)

    For the past four years, Todd Luoto has been a shorts programmer for the Sundance Film Festival. He has also worked for CineVegas, Kodak, Silver Lake Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival and Dimension Films. Luoto is also a filmmaker himself, his last short having screened at the Tribeca, AFI, and Dallas International Film Festivals, among others.

    Hubert Sielecki (Austria)

    Hubert Sielecki was born in 1946 in Carinthia in Austria. In 1968-1976 he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the Film School in Łódź. Since 1973 he has worked as an freelance artist. Sielecki experiments with colour photography, makes objects, environments and performances triggered off in an electronic, mechanic and acoustic way as well as non-commercial posters and traditional photographs. He is also a musician and a painter with a number of exhibitions. Since 1982 he has held a lectureship in the Studio for Experimental and Animated Film, in the master class of Maria Lassnig, Christian Ludwig (Attersee) - since 1990 and Judith Eisler - since 2009, at Vienna's Academy of Applied Arts.

    Maciej Drygas - Chairman

    Maciej Drygas is a documentary film director. After graduation from the Film Directing Department of Moscow's VGIK in 1981 he worked with Krzysztof Zanussi and Krzysztof Kieślowski as an assistant director. His documentary films include "False Start" (1981), "Psychotherapy" (1984), "Hear My Cry" (1991), "Weightless" (1994), "Voice of Hope" (2002), "One Day in People's Poland" (2005), "Hear Us All" (2008). He has won awards at numerous festivals, including Mumbai, Houston, Tai Pei, Monte Carlo, San Francisco, Nyon and Krakow. He works as a film teacher at the Film School in Łódź and the Laboratory of Reportage at Warsaw University.

    Barbara Hollender

    Barbara Hollender is a film critic. A graduate of the Sociology Department at Warsaw University, she has worked, among others, for Polish television TVP, the editorial boards of Ekran and Film, two Polish monthlies devoted to film and cinema, and since 1992 she has been writing for "Rzeczpospolita", a Polish daily. Hollender has interviewed eminent directors and actors. She has published abroad for American "Variety", French "Positif" and German "Felix" (European Film Academy magazine). She cooperates with Wallflower Press, a publishing house from the UK, writing texts about Poland's cinema to the "International Film Guide" published every year. Hollender has co-authored the following books: "Gwiazdy w zbliżeniu" (A Close-up on Stars) and "Studio Tor" (The Tor Film Studio).

    Krystian Lupa

    A stage director and set designer, Lupa also adapts and composes music to his own performances and works as a translator, graphic artist and teacher at Krakow's School of Dramatic Art. He began his university education as a student of the Physics Department of the Jagiellonian University to move on to study Graphic Arts at Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts, Film Directing at the Film School in Łódź and Stage Directing at Krakow's School of Dramatic Art. After studies he was associated with the Cyprian Norwid Theatre in Jelenia Góra and the Stary Theatre in Kraków. His performances, including "Kalkwerk" and "The Sleepwalkers", aim to seeks new means of expression and have won him avid fans all over the world.

    Andrzej Pągowski

    Andrzej Pągowski is an artist who has created about one thousand posters, including film, theatre, music and social awareness posters. A graduate of the Poster Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, he also illustrates books and newspapers, works for record companies designing covers and inlay cards, prepares theatre and television sets, writes screenplays and makes video clips. Since 1986 he has held a number of positions as an artistic and graphic director of many magazines including the Polish edition of ‘Playboy', which was his longest tenure. Pągowski has received a number of prestigious awards and distinctions in Poland and abroad.

    Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz

    Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz received her Master's Degree in Painting from the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław (1978), and in Film Directing from Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty of University of Silesia in Katowice (1982). She works as a set designer and film director, making both feature films, e.g. "The End of the World" (1993), and documentaries, which include "I Am Man" (1986), "The Office" (1986), "I Don't Believe Politicians" (1990), "Generation 1989" (2003), "Dailynews.pl" (2004), "Gdanski Railway Station" (2007), "I Love Poland"(2008), "My Cuba, My Poland" (2008), "An Ordinary March" (2008). Zmarz-Koczanowicz has received many prestigious awards at festivals, among others, in Paris, Krakow and Wiesbaden.
