50th Krakow Film Festival Highlights – the first day, 31st of May 2010

    5pm - a screening of a film from the Focus on Israel section ‘Yes, Miss Comander' dir. Dan Setton, Itzik Lerner KINO POD BARANAMI, Red Auditorium

    Plot: A military base in Galilee conducts a special training programme addressed to young men from pathological environment. The cadre of commanders constitute young women.

    7pm - the Opening Ceremony of the 50th KFF

    On Monday evening those who decide which films receive awards appear on stage. This year, their work is headed by Marian Marzyński, Krzysztof Zanussi, Maciej Drygas. They will be supported by: Nati Baratz (Israel), Martichka Bozhilova (Bulgaria), Barbara Hollender (Poland), Borys Lankosz (Poland), Georgi Lazarevski (France), Todd Luoto (USA), Krystian Lupa (Poland), Andrzej Pągowski (Poland), Hubert Sielecki (Austria), Grażyna Torbicka (Poland) and Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz (Poland).

    On the occasion of the jubilee, the organizers will take us to the past - short film edited by Jacek Nagłowski from archival footage of the 90's will be presented. After years, the first laureate Witold Giersz will meet again on the stage with the first jury chairman, Ryszard Karwicki. Surprise-appearances of people involved with the Festival in the past are also planned.

    The highlight of the evening is the screening of "Two Rembrandts in the Garden" (Documentary Competition). The filmmakers present at the Opening Ceremony: the director Jerzy Śladkowski, the producer Marek Nowowiejski, German coproducers Hans Pausch, Evelyn Wenzel, Daniel Petra and the main characters Marek Atkin and his father David Atkin.

    Plot: A story about grandchildren of Jewish survivors from the Second World War who return to Łódź in search of valuables allegedly buried by their grandfather shortly before his escape. Unfortunately, the family tenement house is now the army's property.

    10pm - a screening of a film from the Sound of Music section ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers: Untitled Documentary' dir. David Hausen, KINO POD BARANAMI, Red Auditorium

    Plot: This documentary shows the history behind the production of video clips to three songs from "Stadium Arcadium"
