Surviving Life by Jan Švankmajer in Venice

Prague, August 13, 2010 - Jan Švankmajer's latest film, Surviving Life, is set to premiere at the upcoming 67th Venice Film Festival.

The 67th edition of the international film festival will take place in Venice from September 1-11. This year, Czech cinema will be represented by world-renown director Jan Švankmajer and his the latest film, Surviving Life.

"Both Jan Švankmajer and I are naturally thrilled the movie will premiere in Venice. It will be screened out of competition, as we don't compete on principle because we think setting objective criteria for competitions is nearly impossible. At the same time, I have to say that preparing all the materials for the festival, whether the copy, DVDs, promotional materials and so on, is very challenging and very costly for us," says film producer Jaromír Kalista of Athanor, the Czech production company.

The movie will be screened out of competition and its world premiere is scheduled for 2:30 pm on September 10, in the Sala Grande. The Sala Grande, the Venice Film Festival's main cinema, has a capacity of 1,100 seats and is located inside the Palazzo del Cinema, the festival hub from year one in 1937.

Czech movies have screened at the Venice Film Festival in the past, including Foxes in 2009 in the Critics' Week section, and Bohdan Slama's A Country Teacher in 2008 in the Venice Days section.
