SARAJEVO: Srđan Šarenac, the award winning documentary filmmaker whose film Village Without Women (2010, Les Films du Balibari) was screened at 70 film festivals worldwide and won 14 prizes, has started pre-production on the documentary Prison Beauty Queen Contest.

Šarenac was still in post-production for Village Without Women when he started thinking about making a movie concentrating on the 15 days during which prisoners sentenced to long-term prison sentences participate in a Beauty Queen Contest in hopes of becoming a beauty queen – a flattering title that comes with a TV appearance and the possibility of early release. This unusual event happens every October in Brazil, and Šarenac’s documentary will try to capture the atmosphere of hope surrounding this event, something that, in his opinion, the European system is not offering convicts at all.

Prison Beauty Queen Contest, produced by Novi Film, was developed through the Nipkow Programm and supported by the MEDIA Project Development Fund and the Croatian Audiovisual Center.

The film is budgeted at 200,000 EUR, but there is still some uncertainty about the final budget, because the project received only 40,900 EUR for production from Film Fund Sarajevo.
