SOFIA: Bulgarian director Stefan Komadarev (The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner, shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2010) will show ten minutes from his new film The Judgment at the Sofia Meetings Works in Progress section.
Komadarev started the editing of his 1.9 m EUR Bulgarian-German-Macedonian-Croatian coproductionbeginning of January this year and plans to finish it by the end of May, 2013.
The Judgement received development support by the MEDIA programme and was developed at workshops including ScriptEast, EAVE and Sofia Meetings. It received production support from the Bulgarian National Film Center, Bulgarian National Television, MDM, the Medienboard Berlin Brandenbourg, DFFF, the Macedonian Film Fund and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. The Judgment was also supported with 250,000EUR from Eurimages. The coproducers areAlexander Ris from German Neue Mediopilis Filmproduction, Vladimir Anastasov from Macedonian Sektor Film and Boris T. Matic from Croatia’s Propeler Film.
The emotional story of a Bulgarian man forced to kill a young GDR couple who tried to escape to the West across the Bulgarian-Turkish border under communism, and two decades later smuggles people from Turkey into Bulgaria, was filmed between 25 October and 21 December 2012 in extremely difficult conditions with 40% night scenes. The main actors Assen Blatechki, Miki Manojlovich, Ovanes Torossian, Vasil Vasilev-Zueka, Ina Nikolova, Paraskeva Djukelova and 30 local people adapted to the cold and often stormy weather, sometimes under “red code” on location mountainous villages and surroundings.
