SOFIA: The Grand Prix for best film in the International Competition for first and second films of the 17th Sofia IFF went to the black and white film Oh Boy by Jan Ole Gerster.
Produced by Schiwago Film the film has already won over 25 awards at different festivals among which the Young German Cinema Award for Screenwriting at Filmfest München and theAudience Award at the Talinn Black Nights Film Festival. First time director Gerster is known for his work for director Tom Tykwer at X-Filme and as Wolfgang Becker’s assistant on Goodbye, Lenin.
The international jury headed by Turkish director Yesim Ustaoglu gave its Special prize to The Last Elvis by Armando Bo from Argentina, another much awarded film. The film also received the Young Jury award.
Best director went to American Adam Leon for his Gimme the Loot.
Bulgarian director Milko Lazarov was awarded for his debut film Alienation in which a 50 year old Greek man wants to buy an unborn Bulgarian baby. The film is produced by the Bulgarian National Television.
The Paraffin Prince produced by Bulgarian director Pavel Vesnakov was awarded Best Short Film and Bulgarian director Youlian Tabakov received a Special Mention for his creative documentary Tzvetanka.
The Association of Film Producers in Bulgaria presented a Special Award to the Chief Executive Officer of Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung GmbH (MDM) Manfred Schmidt, in recognition of his and MDM’s persistent belief in the quality of Bulgarian films by supporting 12 Bulgarian films.
This 2013 SIFF presented 246 films from 49 countries and hosted over 150 international guests. The Media supported co-production market of SIFF Sofia Meetings (14-17 March 2013) marked its tenth year anniversary.
