FNE at Jihlava IDFF Emerging Producers: Nina Pehlivanova

By

FNE interviews Bulgarian documentary producer Nina Pehlivanova, selected to participate in the 2013 Emerging Producers workshop at the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival.

    1. What are your hopes and expectations from Emerging Producers?

I hope to find new colleagues and collaborators who are passionate about documentary film making.

    2. What are YOU bringing to Emerging Producers?

I will bring my new documentary Roma Quixote, my young Bulgarian (hard) experience, my smile and some good Bulgarian wine.

    3. What is the position of documentary film in your country?

Unfortunately not very good. During communism every cinema screening started with a “cinema run-down” which was a short documentary before each movie. People had developed the culture of watching documentaries. Today is the closing of the first documentary festival in Sofia, Sofia Biting Docs. There were showing great movies from around the world, but only a few screenings had large audiences. A lot of people in the country don’t know how many amazing documentaries exist. The problem is complex, because there are almost no documentaries with theatrical distribution and only the national television is obliged to show documentaries, but they buy about 5 movies per year. Soon will finish construction of the first Bulgarian website for the legal download of movies (www.gledaisega.com) and they have the ambition of making Bulgarian cinema popular here and abroad.

    4. What are the coproduction possibilities for documentary producers in your country?

The National Film Fund and Bulgarian National TV.

    5. What are your thoughts on the system of funding of documentary films today?

Where? I am not satisfied with the Bulgarian system of funding and I don’t know foreign practices in depth.

    6. Which producer is your inspiration and ideal?

In Bulgaria, Martichka Bozhilova. I know her personally and I’ve learned a lot of things from her. She is young, open minded, extremely ambitious and a hard working woman.
