VARNA: The Lesson was inspired by the real story of a teacher caught in a bank robbery attempt. Scriptwriters/directors/producers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov focused their debut feature on a fictional English teacher from a high school near Sofia. The Lesson screens in the main competition of the Varna Golden Rose Film Festival (11-17 October 2014).
Grozeva and Valchanov are producing through Abraxas Film in coproduction with Greece’s Graal Film. The project did not receive any national public financing in Bulgaria. It was shot with a very low budget, but it was supported by ZDF, the American Foundation for Bulgaria and the Central Cooperative Union.
The DoP Krum Rodriguez shot the film in a documentary style and international press compared it with the Dardenne’s. The film stars Margita Gosheva and the cast includes Ivan Burnev, Stefan Denolubov, Ivan Savov, Andrea Todorova and Ivanka Bratoeva.
Shortly after having been selected for the Contemporary World Cinema section of the Toronto International FF, The Lesson grabbed the New Directors award of the 62nd San Sebastian International Film Festival (19-27 September 2014). In Toronto the filmwas picked up for worldwide sales by Wide.
