Eastern Plays received Lux nomination

By Pavlina Jeleva
Kamen Kalev's acclaimed look at Sofia's underground youth life, Eastern Plays, has received one of the coveted three nominations for the European LUX Prize of 2009.

Together with the German-Danish-Dutch Sturm by Hans-Christian Schmid and the French Welcome by Philippe Lioret, Eastern Plays will be screened at the European Parliament in Brussels in November, with the winner announced on November 25.

If the film were to win the vote by the 736 members of the European Parliament, Eastern Plays would become the first Bulgarian film to be subtitled in the 23 official European languages.

The film received the CICAE award at the Sarajevo IFF (www.cicae.org). Shot without any national subsidy, the postproduction of the film was supported by the Swedish regional fund Film i Väst (www.filmivast.se).

Awaited with raising interest by the Bulgarian audience the film has still not been released nationally. The film is represented by sales agent Memento Films (www.memento-films.com). The date of the release will be announced after Tokyo International Film Festival, where Eastern Plays is competing in the main program.
