Tilt Tops Bulgarian Box Office

By Pavlina Jeleva

SOFIA: Viktor Chouchkov Jr.'s debut film Tilt (www.tilt.bg) rose to the top spot on the Bulgarian box office on its opening weekend 11-13 February 2011), with 14,200 admissions and box office of €56,000. The results were due to an unprecedented large scale distribution strategy and a strong marketing campaign. Tilt also follows the success of last year's Bulgarian box office hit, Mission London, which reignited interest in national films.

The distribution company A Plus (www.facebook.com/aplusfilms) released the film with 23 prints (15 35mm and 8 DCP), the largest distribution for a Bulgarian film since 1989. The film debuted to a packed premiere on 9 February and attracted exceptional interest from the media, including national media partner Bulgarian National Television (www.bnt.bg) which co-produced the film.

Distributor Hristo Dermendjiev said the results of Tilt are not surprising. "The film achieved results that have been achieved by some American films with international stars. Therefore as a whole we expect at least 60,000 admissions, but they could be much higher."

The film is also aided by the popularity of its young actors Iavor Baharov and Radina Kardjilova, stars of the TV series "A Glass Home", produced and broadcast by private station bTV (www.btv.bg).

The film will be in the main competition of the Sofia Film Festival (www.siff.bg), 4-13 March 2011.
