By

CANNES: Paris based international sales outfit Le Pacte has picked up both of the Bulgarian films that are screening in official selection in Cannes IFF this year. The Island directed by Kamen Kalev and produced by his Waterfront Film (Bulgaria www.waterfrontfilm.net) and coproduced by Chimney Pot (Sweden) is screening in the Directors' Fortnight and Ave directed by Konstantin Bojanov and produced by KB Films (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and coproduced by Camera Ltd is screening in Critics' Week.

Both films will be distributed in France and sold worldwide by Le Pacte.
Ave is a tale about Kamen who is hitchhiking from Sofia to Ruse. He meets Avé, a 17-year-old runaway girl. With each ride they hitch, Avé invents new indentities for them, and her compulsive lies get Kamen deeper and deeper into trouble. Reluctantly drawn into this adventure, Kamen begins to fall in love with the fleeting Ave.

The Island which stars Laetitia Casta and Thure Lindhardt is about a couple, Sophie and Daneel, a couple living in Paris. Sophie initiates a surprise journey to Bulgaria. Daneel explicitly refuses to go, but Sophie insists and finally convinces him to to. When they arrive, Sophie discovers that Daneel was born there. The trip turns into something very different from the holiday Sophie envisioned.
