ZAGREB: Croatian films are continuing their ascent on the domestic market in the first half of 2013, exceeding the trend that started in 2012 when admissions tripled compared to 2011.

The star of 2013 is Vinko Bresan’s comedy Priest’s Children with 158,130 admissions to date. The film produced by Interfilm took in 589,614 EUR since 3 January 2013. It was distributed by Continental film in 17 prints and set an opening record since Croatian independence.

Bresan’s film results are better than those of the previous leader, Srdan Dragovejic’s Parade, a Croatian minority coproduction that sold 167,154 tickets since opening in Croatia on Christmas 2011 and in release through 2012.

The second domestic winner in 2013 is Dražen Žarković’s children’s film The Mysterious Boy. The sequel to local blockbuster Koko and the Ghosts sold 68,196 tickets since opening on 28 February 2013. Produced by Kinorama and distributed by 2i Film in 19 prints, the film is still in cinemas. It took in 211,259 EUR in the first 25 weeks of 2013 and it is now on the seventh position with 10,739 admissions more than Iron Man 3 (launched eight weeks ago). Koko and the Ghosts was released on 13 prints by Continental film and had 73,566 admissions in 2011-2012.

Vlatka Vorkapic's Sonja and the Bull comes the third in the domestic chart 2013 with 41,457 tickets sold and a total admissions of 97,487 since opening mid-December 2012.

Recent Croatian releases have had strong opening week-end results, setting new records. The Croatian Audiovisual Centre which financed these films considers 2012 and the first part of 2013 a turning point in reviving the relationship between audience and filmmakers.
