ZAGREB: Nebojša Slijepčević’s documentary Gangster of Love, a coproduction between Croatia, Germany and Romania, sold 6,664 tickets domestically in the first four weeks including 5,000 tickets in the first two weeks, a success for a domestic documentary.

The biggest documentary hit, Igor Mirkovic’s documentary Happy Child/Sretno dijete reached 20,000 admissions in 2003. Gangster of Love managed to attract the audience thanks to its story, a matchmaker helping a single mother to find a husband in Croatia, and to its humorous approach to the conservative nature of Croatian men.

The main character is the charismatic Nedjeljko Babic who left his job as a carpenter 25 years ago to become a successful matchmaker wearing sunglasses and calling himself Gangster.

Gangster te voli/Gangster of Love was produced by the Croatian company Restart together with the German company Kloos & Co and the Romanian company Sub-Cult-Ura. It was supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Center and the Romanian National Centre for Cinema.

With almost no marketing budget, Restart distributed the film in Croatia in 32 cinemas in 29 cities. The marketing campaign included the Gangster song and a comic book about the film with stills printed on T-shirts and bags.
