EFP Producer on the Move: Croatia's Ankica Juric Tilic

By Goran Ivanisevic

Ankica Juric Tilic balances post-graduate studies in literature with her position as chief producer of Zagreb-based Croatian production company she founded in 2003, Kinorama.

Along with her previous free-lance work for television and independent production companies, Tilic has produced three feature films and 10 shorts for Kinorama. The company is currently presenting its new projects at European production markets and script development workshops.

Most recently she finished the production of the feature film The Blacks directed by Goran Devic and Zvonimir Juric (the script was developed at EAVE and Cinelink) and the short Party directed by Dalibor Matanic, which has been selected for this years Critic's Week in Cannes. Her previous project Kino Lika, produced in 2008, directed by Dalibor Matanic, was presented at 13 international film festivals and won 4 international awards (2 of them grand prix) and 3 Croatian awards.

As a student, Tilic worked at several part-time jobs, trying to figure out the perfect choice for her future. "I decided that I would choose it following only one criterion: I wanted to work in different places with different people. Later on, little by little, I realised that I can both fulfil my wish and be part of the inspiring film-makers world at the same time. So my choice was made," she said.

Kinorama is developing 4 new feature films and co-developing two co-productions. The feature film for children, Koko and the Ghosts already has a Slovenian co-producer on board. Mother of Asphalt is directed by Matanic, the director of Kino Lika. The Shot and In the Woods are to be directed by first-time directors, Robert Orhel and Ivan-Goran Vitez.

In future, she would like to maintain this rhythm, while raising the number of the projects that she is working on (especially co-productions) to a point that allows her to take good care of each of them.

Speaking on the future of film in Croatia, she says that the quality of Croatian films risen in the last decade and hopes that this progress will continue. For a country of four million people, producing 8 to 10 features per year is satisfactory, Tilic believes. She hopes that they manage to attract the audience back to the theatres, the biggest problem facing Croatian filmmakers at the moment.
