FESTIVALS: Cyprus IFF Opens

    NICOSIA: The 6th Cyprus International Film Festival (www.cyprusfilmfestival.org) opened on 30 September 2011 and runs through 16 October. This year, the festival screens two world premieres among the 26 Greek and Cypriot films in the programme.

    Entries from 98 countries for 10 categories will compete for the "Golden Aphrodite" award, in sections comprising feature and short length films, animation, films about dance, films for teens and children, anti-war films and visualized poetry from emerging filmmakers.

    Two Cypriot feature films make their world premiere at this Festival. Dinner with My Sisters by Michael Hapeshis and Paramnesia by Eleftherios Kakathymis.

    Festival events include will be an open discussion panel with directors, journalists and public held on 15 October 15. The festival wraps on 16 October when the jury -- award-winning Greek actress Anna Synodinou, Cypriot filmmaker and producer Nicholas Demetriou, award-winning composer Maro Theodorakis, winning Indian producer Vivek Singhania and Van Papadopoulos program coordinator Cannes Classic -- will announce the prize-winners.

    The following films are competing for the festival's main prize, the Golden Aphrodite:

    "Marieke, Marieke" by Sophie Schouckens, Belgium

    "Europolis" by Cornel Gheorghita, Romania - France

    "Paramnesia" by Eleutherios Kakathimis (english dialogues, greek subtitles), Cyprus - Director's presence

    "Sotiria" by Iason Tzavelas, Greece

    "Donkeys of the Borders" by Jeton Ahmetaj, Serbia - Director's presence

    "The lonesome lobster" by George Bakollas, Greece

    "My last valentine in Beirut" by Salim el Turk, Lebanon - Director's presence
