PRODUCTION: The Painted Bird in Development

By Iulia Blaga

PRAGUE: Czech producer/director Vaclav Marhoul is adapting the bestselling novelThe Painted Bird, by Polish-American authorJerzy Kosinski.

Shooting for his first film since Tobruk (2008) is set to start February 2014 and the premiere for autumn 2016.

The Painted Bird /Nabarvené ptáče is not an easy project, Marhoul told FNE. "It took almost two years to research and negotiate the film rights, almost two years for the script writing process, it will take two years to properly structure and finance the budget, nine months for pre-production, almost two years the principal photography and nine months for post-production."

Marhoul is producing with his company Silver Screen (www.silverscreen.cz). He plans to send the new translation of the script to international co-producers who have already expressed interest. The estimate budget is 5 million Euro. Marhoul told FNE that he plans to pitch the project at Scripteast 2013 (www.scripteast.pl) and at Berlin Co-Production Market 2013.

Published in 1965, The Painted Bird is a holocaust story of a young boy wandering in Europe during WWII. Kosiński also wrote Being There, directed by Hal Ashby in 1979 and starring Peter Sellers.
