BELGRADE: Screening in the East of the West competition, Withering/Odumiranje by Miloš Pušić is a Serbian-Swiss coproduction investigating the conflict between generations and Serbia’s current fascination with Western Europe.
“Almost 500,000 people left my country in the last15 years. With this movie we are trying to understand why that is happening, and we try not to judge the people who did that and definitely not to judge the people who stayed in Serbia,” Branislav Trifunović, who produced through Belgrade-based Hit and Run Production, told FNE.
The script written by Dušan Spasojević is based on a play staged at Atelje 212 theatre in Belgrade and follows Janko who, after years spend in Belgrade, returns to his half-deserted village but is willing to leave for Switzerland.
Branislav Trifunović plays the main character. The cast includes Boris Isaković, Dara Džokić, Jasna Đuričić, Emir Hadzihafizbegović and Milica Janevski. Aleksandar Ramadanović is the DoP.
The film is coproduced with the new Swiss company Burning Parrot and is internationally represented by Zürich sales company Secondo films ( http://www.secondofilm.com).
The film was shot from late July through late September 2012 on a budget of approximately 600,000 EUR, Trifunović told FNE. The project was awarded first prize at the grant contest organised by the Serbian Ministry of Culture ( http://www.kultura.gov.rs/en), and it also had a grant from the state province of Vojvodina. The film will have its national premiere in November 2013 and will be distributed in Serbia by Megacom films (http://mcf.rs/).
