KARLOVY VARY: Producers and a scriptwriter of a proposed Czech-Polish coproduction entitled Binderiana presented the project at Karlovy Vary’s recent Pitch and Feedback forum, telling the panel that they’re still looking for the right director to handle the unusual genre film.

Binderiana, which is set in both Czechoslovakia and Poland in the 1970’s, was described as a “creepy, dark” absurd film with a fairytale story and elements of comedy and romantic adventure. The production team called it “a new genre in Czech cinema.” The story line begins with a Polish secret agent who falls in love with a French scientist and through a series of adventures ends up with the hero and heroine in disguise at a circus in Marienbad.

The producers have already received a grant of 280,000 EUR from the Czech Film Fund and have Polish distribution through Gutek Film. They are looking for a French coproducer.

The young production team from the company Vernes, founded in 2010, include producers Jana Bebrova and Zdenek Holy and scriptwriter Dzian Baban who is co-authoring with Vojtech Masek. The Polish coproducer is Jacek Naglowski of Centrala.

The film is budgeted at 1.5 m EUR. The expecte release date is 2017.
