PRODUCTION: Tallinn and Thessaloniki Winner Kids from the East

By

TALLINN: Czech producer Michal Kracmer might need to stop pitching his new project Kids from the East for the time being. He has already won two accreditations to the Cannes Producers Network, most recently at the Baltic Event.

The film, which started off as a Czech/Slovak coproduction, added Greece to the list of coproduction countries after winning a 100,000 EUR post-production prize courtesy of Athens company 2|35. Kids from the East is produced by Kracmer’s young company cinedix and will be the feature film debut from awarded Slovak short film director Aramisova, who told FNE, “I need only one name.”

The story about a ten-year old member of a kids gang in a housing estate in eastern Slovakia received kudos from attendees of the Baltic Event for its light-hearted approach to the subject matter. “We show the story from an optimistic kid’s point of view,” Aramisova said. “It’s not a tragedy.” The project was selected for the 2014 edition of MIDPOINT. The film is planned as a Slovak language production.

The film will have a budget of 680,000 EUR, with 182,000 EUR funding in place. It received development funding from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, and FAMU is also attached. Kracmer told FNE that he has interest from Czech TV, and from Poland, France, and several Baltic/Nordic countries. The producer is looking for one additional shooting location. The shoot is planned for summer 2016.

Kracmer is also in preproduction with The Beauteous which is planned as the first gay-themed Czech film. He told FNE that since pitching the project in Karlovy Vary, he has had interest from a French sales agent and has added a new co-writer to the project, Lucie Kajankova. The film, which will be directed by Jan Kobler, is planned as a coproduction to shoot in fall 2016.
