The film was shot in part in Poland, with Wroclaw standing in for 1960 Berlin. The shoot in Wrocław was supported by the Wrocław Film Commission. The DoP was accomplished Polish cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, Spielberg’s frequent collaborator.

Powers was a consultant on the film, and his Q&A at the end of the screening set straight a number of details in the films which were not in accord with his father’s recounting of the incident. The special screening and Powers’ attendance were arranged with the help of the Prague Cold War Museum. Members of the armed forces and the Czech Ministry of the Interior were among those attending the screening.
