PRAGUE: The 51st edition of the Karlovy Vary IFF, running 1-9 July 2016, resumes its mantel as the world’s gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, with eight of the twelve films in the main competition coming from the CEE region.

The competition ranges from what will certainly be a nostalgic tribute to Czech New Wave legend Jan Nemec to films from contemporary directors who are building the reputations of Polish, Romanian, Hungarian and Slovenian films.

Eight of the films are world premieres, with the remaining four having their world premieres at Karlovy Vary.  Eleven of the 12 films come from continental Europe, with Canada supplying the lone non-European competitior.

The emphasis on CEE films gives the region a double edged advantage, with another dozen CEE films selected for the East of the West competition. Non-European films are relegated to the international documentary competition, where Egypt, the US and Argentina are represented.

Most of the films in the main competition are from established filmmakers, such as Jan Hrebejk (directing the Slovak/Czech coproduction The Teacher), Hungary’s Szabolcz Hajdu, Slovenia’s Damjan Kozole and Romania’s Catalin Mitulescu. France and Italy hold on to their place in the competition with a coproduction The Confessions by Robeerto Ando.
