Czech TV Raided by Military Police

By FNE Staff
PRAGUE: Czech head of military police and two commanders have been suspended after a raid on the news desk of Czech public broadcaster Czech TV (www.ceskatelevize.cz) which was captured live by TV cameras during a news broadcast. A five hour search for a sensitive military intelligence file resulted in the confiscation of computer and film equipment, contracts and reporters' notes.

The action, despite a court order, was criticized by the Czech prime minister as excessive. The raid consisted of nearly a dozen masked police officers who were carrying assault rifles, according to local reports.

In a statement, Czech TV said, "Czech Television demands a thorough investigation into the attack on the independence of a public television service and that those behind this unprecedented action take responsibility."

The raid was unsuccessful in recovering the materials in question, which had led to a 2007 dismissal of the head of military intelligence.
