COTTBUS: Estonian producer Max Tuula of Marx Film presented the Estonian/Russian project The Dream Fish at Connecting Cottbus, a tale about a man who falls in love with a mermaid.

The story is set in a small resort town on the border of Russia and Estonia, with the locale being a source of inspiration for the writer/director Anton Blizho, making his feature film debut. The romantic black comedy is laced with cultural clashes and misunderstandings reflecting the mix of cultures in the border locale, where a modest, lonely Russian man working on an encyclopedia of fish falls in love with a mermaid who saves him from drowning.

The budget of the film is 450,000 EUR with 250,000 EUR of funding from Russia in place. The filmmakers are looking for a Baltic or Nordic actress and a Scandinavian DoP, essential in establishing a cool, minimalistic Scandinavian stylistic element to the film. The filmmakers are applying to the Estonian Film Fund and are seeking coproduction partners for post-production.
