TALLINN: The Spy and the Poet / Luuraja ja Luuletaja by Toomas Hussar will be released domestically on almost 40 screens on 23 September 2016, a large opening by Estonian standards. Oscar-nominated Ivo Felt from Allfilm is the producer.

The film tells the story of a lonely and uncharismatic secret service officer Gustav (played by Jan Uuspõld), who meets a mysterious gypsy woman (Lana Vatsel). This turns out to be a trap set by the Russian intelligence. Gustav is ordered to continue the relationship to get a better understanding of the enemy’s plans. Unfortunately, Gustav finds himself struggling with the task, as he is falling in love with the lady.

The Spy and the Poet is the second feature by Hussar, whose debut feature, the political comedy Mushrooming (Allfilm) took Estonian box office by a storm in 2012 with over 72,000 admissions and number four spot in the year’s Top Ten.

The Spy and the Poet is budgeted at 670,000 EUR, with all major Estonian financing sources tipping in: the Estonian Film Institute, Estonian Cultural Endowment, the commercial channel TV3 and also Allfilm’s private sources.

The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Karlovy Vary IFF. Allfilm is distributing it in Estonia and it is also the sales agent.
