Estonia Cinema Attendance Reaches 18-year High

By Martin Aadamsoo

TALLINN: Newly released data shows that 2010 saw Estonian audiences flock to cinemas in record numbers. The total number of admissions reached 2.1 million in a country of 1.3 inhabitants, the highest figure of the last 18 years. The previous record of 3.4 million admissions dates back to the early days of Estonia's independence in 1992. The number af admissions was 400,000 higher than results from 2009.

The prinicipal reason for the growth was the sharp reduction in ticket prices caused by the opening of a second chain of multiplexes in the two largest towns, Tallinn and Tartu. The average ticket price dropped 17% from a year earlier to 3.6 EUR. Part of the rise in admissions is also attributable to the growing popularity of 3D films topping the box office table. The total number of films screened across the country was 294.
