Finland Selected Finnish, Estonian, German Coproduction The Fencer as Oscar Bid

    HELSINKI: The Fencer by Klaus Härö has been selected as the official Finnish feature candidate for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Oscar Awards. This is Härö’s fourth film selected as a Finnish Oscar bid.

    The film is a coproduction with Estonia’s Allfilm and the German Kick Film and was shot largely on location in Estonia. The drama set in Soviet-occupied Estonia follows a fencing champion from Leningrad who arrives in the small coastal town of Haapsalu in 1952, and start teaching children the art of fencing.

    Anna Heinämaa wrote the script and the Estonian actor Märt Avandi is starring. The film is produced by Making Movies
