Georgian Films at the 67th Film Festival in Cannes 2014

    Georgian films are broadly represented at the 67th film festival in Cannes, 2014.

    Eldar Shengelaya’s „Blue Mountains" will be screened in the section Cannes Classics 2014 as a masterpiece of Georgian cinema. The screening will be held in Cannes on May 18. This year an honorary guest of this section is Sofia Loren.

    The digital version of "The Blue Mountains”, exclusively restored from the original negative, will be shown in Cannes (the original is preserved at "Gosfilmfond”).

    The film was restored especially for this festival screening with the support of GNFC.

    Dea Kulumbegashvili’s debut "Invisible Spaces” participates in the main competition of short films.This 10-minutes’ Georgian film was selected out of 3450 films from 128 countries and was named among the 9 best films. The winner will be announced by the Jury President – Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. The screening will be held on May 23.

    "The Search” by Michel Hazanavicius, a large portion of which was shot in Georgia, is a French-Georgian coproduction participating in the main competition at Cannes. The film is dedicated to the war in Chechnya (the film is produced by studioSarke").

    This year GNFC will present a Georgian pavilion at CannesFilm Market for the 7th time (May 14-25) (#105, Village International Riviera).

    From the industrial point of view, the pavilion will be hosted by GNFC Director Nana Janelidze, First Deputy - Giorgi Khabashvili and Georgia’s representative to Eurimages – Tamar Tatishvili, as well as the Head of GNFC Distribution and Exports Department Davit Vashadze and Project Manager Nino Shervashidze.

    The meetings at the film market will be arranged in the following directions:

    • Establishing contacts with film funds of various countries, planning future projects and identification of sources of alternative financing for Georgian projects.
    • Enhancing relations with European regional film funds with the aim of exchange of experience.
    • Dissemination of trailers of recent Georgian films and offering them to various international festivals.
    • Positioning of Georgia as an attractive country for film shooting.

    On May 18, at 17 : 00, a reception (Happy Hour) will be held at the Georgian pavilion aimed at introducing Georgia and its films to foreign guests.

    Georgian directors and producers will attend the Cannes festival for diverse purposes. These are: Tinatin Kajrishvili, Lasha Khalvashi, Mariam Khachvani, Vova Kacharava, Noshre Chkhaidze and Eka Jojua.


    Producers on the Move


    As a result of cooperation between European Film Promotion and GNFC, this year Georgian producer and director Tinatin Kajrishvili will participate in the programPRODUCERS ON THE MOVE. She will present a project called "One Way Ticket".

    Besides, there will be four market screenings of Tinatin Kajrishvili’s film "The Brides”.

    Mariam Khachvani and Vova Kacharava participate in the "World Pavilion” of Cannes Festival (Cinema du Monde) with their projectDede".


    Producers Network


    Georgian participants of Mini EAVE training program – Noshre Chkhaize, Eka Jojua and Lasha Khalvashi – will take part in the section Producers Network.
