TBILISI: The Georgian majority coproduction Brighton 4th by Levan Koguashvili won best film, best actor (Levan Tediashvili) and best script awards at the 20th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York (9-20 June 2021). The film also received an award from Netflix, which will contribute to its distribution.

Former wrestling champion Kakhi (Levan Tediashvili, a former Olympic wrestler himself) always has his family on his conscience, and in Brighton 4th this leads him on a cross-continental journey. After making arrangements to cover for his brother’s gambling debts, Kakhi departs his humble home in Georgia to pay a visit to his son Soso (Giorgi Tabidze) in outer Brooklyn. As Kakhi settles into Soso’s Brighton Beach boarding house, which constitutes a pop-up community of fellow Georgian immigrants, he learns that Soso has also a 14,000 USD debt to the local mob boss (Yuriy Zur), a roadblock to Soso’s future in medicine.

The cast includes Kakhi Kavsadze, who sadly died on 27 April 2021, and Nadezhda Mikhalkova.

Brighton 4th was produced by Kino Iberica (Georgia) and coproduced by the Georgian Public Broadcaster, Art Fest (Bulgaria), Moskvich Films (Russia), KNM Monaco (Monaco), Broken Cage Studio (USA), Give Me Liberty Mfg (USA). The film was supported by the Georgian National Film Center, the Bulgarian National Film Center and the Cartu Foundation (Georgia).

The producers are Irakli Rodonaya, Olena Yershova, Michel Merkt, Kateryna Merkt, and the coproducers are Boris Frumin, Stefan Kitanov, Mira Staleva and Abylay Zhakashov. Armen Zuloyan, Tinatin Berdzenishvili, Rusudan Manjgaladze are the executive producers.

The project received the Jury Prize and the ARP Selection Award at the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film Lab in 2019.

The Greek-born Oscar-nominated cinematographer/director Phedon Papamichael is lensing.

Loco Films is handling the sales.

Levan Koguashvili graduated from the Tisch School of Art's Graduate Film Programme in 2006.
