TVP Signs VOD Agreement with UPC

By Katarzyna Grynienko

WARSAW: Polish cable provider UPC is adding productions by public broadcaster TVP to its VOD (video on demand) offer. Before signing the contract with UPC, TVP presented some of its content on a special website, vod.tvp.pl.

UPC is the first company offering programs, series and films produced by TVP (www.tvp.pl) in a VOD package. Discussion with TVP started in August 2010, after UPC acquired the rights to productions of TVN Group (www.tvn.pl), the leading private broadcaster in the Polish market.

Video On Demand is one of the newest broadcasting techniques in Poland. Private broadcasters and cable providers started using VOD in 2006 with N Platform (www.n.pl) pioneering the technology. Since then the VOD offer has been limited and focused on very individual productions such as weekly dramas or sports events. The successful launch of several thematic channels in 2010 resulted in a greater number of varied television productions that can now constitute an expanding and richer VOD offer for cable providers.
