Production: Mundruczó films Frankenstein project

By Dávid Dercsényi

Kornél Mundruczó (Delta, Johanna, Pleasant Days) is in production with The Frankenstein Plan, developed out of his 2007 theatrical piece.

The story was inspired by Mary Shelley's classic book, but takes the tale into new territory. In Mundruczó's re-interpretation, the monster was replaced by a child, who returns home from a boarding school, struggling for the love of his family. Mundruczó turned the play into a film script in 2008.

It will be a „contemporary dark story," the filmmaker said. The main role is portrayed by 19 year-old-kid Rudolf Frecska, who attended boarding school himself and who played the role on stage. The director also appears in the film.

The film is in producrf by Proton Cinema (http://www.protoncinema.hu/), and producer Viktoria Petrányi. The international project is co-producers by Susanne Marian (Essential Filmproduktion of Germany), Gábor Kovács and Ági Pataki (Filmpartners, www.filmpartners.hu ), Gabriele Kranzelbinder (KGP Produktion of Austria, www.kgp.co.at) , and Gábor Sipos (Laokoon Film www.laokoonfilm.com).

The shooting has already started, though the majority of the filming will take place this winter. The Frankenstein Plan is to be released in 2010.

The film was supported by the Motion Picture Public Foundation of Hungarian, which granted HUF 4 million (EUR 14,800) for development in 2008, and HUF 146 million (EUR 540,000) for production in 2009.
