Hungary prepares for MMKA leadership change

By Dávid Dercsényi
Five candidates are under consideration to become the new president of the Motion Picture Public Foundation of Hungary (MMKA, www.mmka.hu): Ferenc Tolvaly, producer András Muhi, scriptwriter Zoltán Kőrösi, producer Andrew G. Vajna, and director Béla Tarr.

The term of the current leadership (trustees and president) expires December 31, 2009. The date of the election has not been announced. A committee has been working on a guideline of MMKA tasks and problems, as well as candidates for the incoming board. The platforms of the five presidential candidates have been presented in a MMKA document.

The committee outlined the following challenges for the MMKA:

    - the need for greater cooperation with television stations

    - the need for a better system of film distribution

    - a decline in the network of the art house cinemas, with a decrease in admissions and less attendance for Hungarian films

    - unclear ownership of the filmvagyon

    - the importance of legal changes in: the film law; the media law; the MMKA structure to enable it to adjust to new challanges, new technological and media environment (internet, digital broadcasting etc.) and new goals.
