Budapest Film leads Hungarian distributors in 2007

By

Thanks to no. 2 and 3 domestic hits Cat City 2 and The Train Keeps a Rollin', Hungarian distributor Budapest Film had the best year in 2007 on the local movie market. Budapest Film handled only five of the country's 28 releases, while Hungarian film specialist Hungarotop handled 14 for third place by total gross revenue, according to the Hungarian National Film Office.

Second spot went to Best Hollywood, distributor of the No. 1 smash hit S.O.S. Love!, which was its only Hungarian release in 2007. The company did not distribute any Hungarian movies in 2006.

That contrasts with Hungarotop, managed by Pal Prukner, a former Budapest Film employee who has built the company into the leading Hungarian film distributor by number of titles. The 14 titles it distributed produced 165 million forints (€627,000) total gross and admissions of 437,982. That gave the distributor 19% of the market, after Budapest Film with 40% and Best Hollywood with 25%.

On the other hand, Hungary's three top film distributors didn't have a single Hungarian release in 2007. For Fórum Film Hungary and UIP-Duna Film, it's not even in their profile, while InterCom did not follow up on its decisive role with big-name domestic pictures such as István Szabó's Relatives (2006, gross 113.6 million forints, admissions 187,710), Lajos Koltai's directorial debut Fateless (2005, gross 265 million forints, admissions 449,240) or company founder Andy Vajna's Children of Glory (2006, gross 366.3 million forints, admissions 451,654).

However, InterCom remains the biggest film distributor company in Hungary (2007: total gross 3 billion forints, total admissions 3.2 million). Former no. 1 distributor MOKÉP had only one title in 2007 (Fresh Air: total gross 4.9 million forints, admissions 8,880), after handling one title in 2006 and two in 2005.
