By FNE Staff

Latvia has chosen director Maris Martinsons' romantic drama Amaya (Hong Kong Confidential) as the country's entry for the Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film category.

The film won out over contender Rudolfa mantojums (Rudolf's Inheritance), a historical drama directed by Janis Streics.

The film premiered 14 September 14 in Latvia, quickly moving to the top slot in box office and attendance.

The $1 million film was produced by Latvian company KrukFilms (www.krukfilms.com) founded by producer Linda Krukle, producer of Martinson's Loss. Filmed in Hong Kong, the film follows the path of six interconnected characters and stars Japanese actress Kaori Momoi.
