VILNIUS: Canadian director Christian Duguay is shooting the TV film Anna Karenina in Vilnius and surrounding locations. Principal photography started 25 October 2012 and will finish on 15 December.

With tax incentives for productions shooting in Lithuania currently under discussion in the Lithuanian parliament, a good base of film professionals and low costs the county looks set to attract an increasing number of foreign productions.

Anna Karenina is produced by Italian film company Lux Vide (www.luxvide.it) and Lithuanian production company Nordic Productions (www.nordicproductions.lt). Lux Vide worked in Lithuania in 2007, filming an adaptation of Tolstoy‘s War and Peace. Producer Milda Leipute said, “The Italians were fascinated by the architectural diversity and atmosphere of Vilnius and its well-organized professionals.” Vilnius will stand in for 19th century Russia. Competitive prices and the diligent cinema industry staff also influenced their choice.

Italian actress Vittoria Puccini plays the starring role. The cast includes Spanish actress Angela Molina, Santjago Cabrera, Max Von Thun and Benjamin Sadler. The production will have a crew of around 100 professionals from Italy and Lithuania, and a cast of about 70 actors from Italy, Germany, France and Lithuania with some 600-700 extras.

Christian Duguay directed the 2003 Emmy nominated miniseries Hitler: The Rise of Evil, which was shot in Prague.
