Potential Partner Emerges for Malta Film Studios

By

VALLETTA: The Malta Minister of Tourism has said that an “expression of interest” in operating the Malta film studios will be published on Thursday, 15 October 2015.

According to the Times of Malta, the Minister said that the studio would continue to be used for film industry purposes. The government is said to favour a public-private partnership with a 10-year agreement.

In 2014 the government reclaimed control of the former Mediterranean Film Studio, which houses the Rinella water tanks, after the private operator had defaulted on rent. The Malta Film Commission subsequently upgraded the facility, resulting in increased use of the facility which helped the boom in the film industry in the past two years. The film industry contributed GBP 5 m in 2013, climbing to GBP 29 m in 2014, and expected to reach GBP 100 m by the end of 2015. A record nine films are shooting in Malta in 2015.
