VALLETTA: Malta has played host to two series in recent weeks, with the Wachowski’s high-profile Sense8 and the Smithsonian Channel-backed Warrior Women, serviced by Parker Film & TV Productions, both filming on the island.

In August 2016, Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech had announced that he was in talks with Netflix over filming related to an unidentified series. Although no official statement has been released since, newspapers and social reports have confirmed that Lana Wachowski was in Malta in September 2016, with Daryl Hannah and the regular Sense8 cast members, wrapping up seven months of filming in various cities around the world, for the second season of the series.

Also set to travel is a series by UK outfit Urban Canyons on warrior women throughout the ages, with other stops beyond Malta in the US, West Africa, Italy, France, Turkey, Austria, Mongolia and the UK.

Coproduced by the Smithsonian Channel in the US and ZDF in Germany, with financing from Compact Media and servicing rebates from the Malta Film Commission, Warrior Women builds on the success of a trilogy on Japanese warrior culture made by Urban Canyons for Smithsonian.

Featuring a substantial number of Maltese actors, the production made extensive use of Fort Ricasoli, a 17th century fortress used as a key location for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and Alejandro Amenabar’s Agora.
