CentEast Works in Progress: Woman's Day

By Katarzyna Grynienko

WARSAW: Polish director Maria Sadowska tackles the issue of female solidarity in a male driven work place in her feature film debut Women's Day, presented during the Warsaw CentEast (www.wff.pl) forum of films in production.

Women's Day follows the life of Halina, a casher from a supermarket chain, who dreams about making a better life for herself and her 13-year-old daughter. When she is unexpectedly promoted to store manager, she quickly finds out that the price for moving up in life is to take part in the exploitation of her former colleagues. In addition she gets involved with her married boss and loses track of her daughter, who starts to fail at school and hangs out with the wrong crowd. When one of her firends has a miscarriage due to work overload, Halina is fired and decides to take her employer to court and gain back the trust of the women working at the store.

In addition to directing, Sadowska is producer as well as an accomplished Polish singer and song writer who started her musical career when she was 14. She made her film debut with Non Stop Colour, a part of the Demakijaż project in 2010.

Women's Day was shot in October and November 2010 in Warsaw. The producers of the picture are Jacek Bromski, Dariusz Gajewski, and Ewa Jastrzębska. Women's Day is produced by Studio Munka (www.studiomunka.pl) and the Polish Filmmakers Association (www.sfp.org.pl). The film is produced with the financial support of the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl). The Polish premiere of the picture is planned for 2012.
