The Performer, the feature debut of Maciej Sobieszczański and Łukasz Ronduda, is the story of an artist obsessed with death, not only his own but also the death of art, whose value in today's world is set by the market and institutional manipulation. The Performer is the result of close cooperation between filmmakers and artists specializing in visual and performance art. The project's co-creator is cinematographer and visual artist Lukasz Gutt.
"The main character is Oskar Dawicki - one of the most interesting contemporary artists from the field of visual arts. He is played by himself, which allows him to present the duality between reality and performance, life and art. The Performer is not a conventional biographical film," Wajda Studio's head of PR and Sales Joanna Solecka told FNE.
The film is produced by Wajda Studio (www.wajdastudio.pl) in coproduction with Futro Film (www.futrofilm.eu), Heliograf (www.heliograf.pl), Film Factory (www.filmfactorystudio.pl) and Artcore (www.artcore.pl). The Performer received financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl), Canal+ (www.canalplus.pl) and Art Stations Foundation (www.artstationsfoundation5050.com). The budget is 1.2 m PLN (300,000 EUR).
"The Studio makes a difference by offering artistic supervision from the best Polish and European artists, and by placing a firm emphasis on project development. The Studio is looking for feature and
documentary films, and short films on contemporary subjects. The Studio focuses on international co-operation and coproductions," Solecka said.
Shooting, which began on 9 August 2012 in Warsaw, is scheduled to last 16 days. The Polish premiere is planned for summer 2013.
