WARSAW: New Blood (Nowa krew), a documentary about Polish villagers who emigrate to Iceland will go into preproduction in summer 2013.

The film is produced by Łódź Film School graduates Haukur M. Hrafnsson from Iceland and Łukasz Długołęcki from Poland. Their film Mission to Mars won Best Film at Reykjavik Short Film days 2012, and is screening at the Cannes short film corner.

The film will be directed by Paweł Ziemilski whose short film Croissant (in Polish: Rogalik) was selected for IDFA.

More than 300 of the villagers of Stare Juchy (which means “Old Blood” in Polish) have emigrated to Iceland since the 1980’s, with none of them returning to their former home. Tempted by a vision of a better life, they set out on a far journey to a country that departs vastly from the Polish notion of the West’s El Dorado, a land of exotic extremes and 130 volcanos. Some are the members of the families are split between their homeland and Iceland, others decide to stay in Stare Juchy. Their motivations and reflections will become an important aspect of the film.

The producers are producing through their independent film production company, NURNew Blood will be their first feature-length production.

The filmmakers received 12,078 EUR in development funding from The Polish Film Institute. The film is expected to be a Polish-Icelandic co-production and the producers are currently looking for partners and coproducers.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in 2014.
