WROCŁAW: In his new drama Wojciech Smarzowski takes on the work of Jerzy Pilch to explore the true image of addiction.
The script for The Mighty Angel is Smarzowski's adaptation of Pilch's bestselling novel about an alcoholic man and the people he meets at therapy sessions. The lead is acclaimed actor Robert Więckiewicz, supported by Julia Kijowska, Adam Woronowicz, Jacek Braciak, Marian Dziędziel, Izabela Kuna, Kingra Preis and Arkadiusz Jakubik.
"At the beginning of the story, Jerzy loses his love because of his illness." said Smarzowski. "At the end, it is due to the need for love that he can overcome it. I would like the viewer to have fun in the first part of the film, feel growing embarrassment in the next part and to sit horrified and silent at the end. I can guarantee that Jerzy Pilch’s novel and my – I suppose I can say so – naughty way of seeing the cinema can combine into an extra strong cocktail. It is only the hangover that everyone will have to deal with on their own."
The film is produced by Profil Film's Jacek Rzehak with a budget of 1.7 million EUR. The shoot launched in November 2012 and was completed in May 2013. The production received 2.5 m PLN from the Polish Film Institute and 600,000 PLN from the Krakow Regional Film Fund. Angel is co-produced by Fundacja EDM Plus, HBO Polska, Kraków Film Commission, Telewizja Polska, Mojotribe and Kino Świat.
The premiere is set for March 2014.
