Bille follows an extraordinary and slightly lonely girl with a vivid imagination and a determined spirit, who attempts to comprehend the adult world, which she sees as very contradictory. In spite of being ignored and not appreciated by her family, she learns to believe in herself and proves her worth.
The film is based on the first book from the popular trilogy Bille written by the Latvian writer Vizma Belsevica, who was nominated five times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
"We are currently in the production stage, with most of the footage shot between July and October 2016, and possible filming in November 2016 and next year. Shooting took place in various locations in Latvia, including the actual house in the suburb or Riga where Vizma Belsevica lived", producer Marta Mannenbach told FNE.
"As the genre of historical drama with contemporary storylines has resurrected in TV and cinema lately, we think Bille certainly has the appeal to address wide audiences. This story also emphasises the eternal need for kids to escape unpleasant environment and problems by diving into their own imagination. Bille has visions and seeks Dreamland just like kids immerse themselves in video games and virtual reality nowadays", Mannenbach also said.
Latvia's Film studio Devini is producing in coproduction with Aleksandra Wojtaszek from Poland’s TouchFilms, Lithuania’s Studijos 2 and Magic Lab from the Czech Republic with a budget of 970,000 EUR and the support of the National Film Center of Latvia and State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia. The premiere has not yet been settled as producers are negotiating with sales agents and distributors.
