WARSAW: VoD service provider Showmax will premiere in Poland on 15 February 2017.
ShowMax is a subsidiary of Naspers, with an engineering team based in the Czech Republic. It launched in South Africa on 19 August 2015 and hit the 10 m subscribers mark in July 2016 and is currently available in over 65 countries. The subscription for Showmax in Poland will cost 19.90 PLN / 5 EUR. The Polish office is headed by Maciej Sojka who worked for Google, ITI Neovision and TVN24. Showmax will offer international film and TV series content, as well as invest in local content including the Polish hit Youtube show Ear of the President / Ucho Prezesa. The show, created by Robert Górski and Kabaret Moralnego Niepokoju, is a comic political mini-series that premiered in Poland on 9 January 2017 and became an instant hit with over 27 m views of the four series episodes on Youtube. Since the premiere and success of the show, several broadcasters have been interested in buying the format for their VOD platforms.
