PRODUCTION: Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik to Direct First Netflix Series in Polish


WARSAW: Netflix commissioned the first locally produced series in Poland, directed by Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik. The title of the series has not been revealed yet. The international premiere is planned for 2018.

The first Netflix show in Polish, created and written by Joshua Long, will showcase an alternative vision of history, set in a world where the Iron Curtain never fell. In 2002, twenty years after a devastating terrorist attack in 1982 that halted the course of Poland’s liberation and the subsequent downfall of the Soviet Union, an idealistic law student and a disgraced police investigator stumble upon a conspiracy that has kept the Iron Curtain standing and Poland living under a repressive police state.

The series is produced by The Kennedy/Marshall Company and Polish The House Media Company. The executive producers of the show are Frank Marshall (Jurrasic World, Jason Bourne) and Robert Zotnowski (House of Cards) from The Kennedy/Marshall Company, Andrzej Besztak from House Media, Joshua Long, Maciej Musiał and Agnieszka Holland.

“We are really happy that we will be able to combine the wonderful experience of the Netflix team, our great American producers and writer, with the Polish talent and the Polish sensibility”, Holland said.

The series will be shot in several locations in Poland.

Netflix premiered in Poland in January 2016, but while the platform opened with an impressive 337,600 subscribers, after the free trial period their number dropped to 73,000 (according to Gemius/PBI) and increased to 80,000 by 15 February 2017. While the initial numbers were not optimistic, the number of people visiting Netflix in Poland was 385,900 by the end of 2016.

Investing in local content is a clear strategy for Netflix in Poland. "Poles are spending more time watching movies and series online. The group of viewers ready to join the subscription plan is growing. Each service that will introduce high quality local content tailored to local needs will have a chance to increase its audience in the near future", said Emil Pawłowski, expert from Gemius/PBI.
