Polish Film Festival in Gdynia Underlines Revival of National Film Industry

By By Anna Franklin in Gdynia
The 33rd annual festival of Polish Feature Films in Gdynia underlined the revival of the national film industry fueled by funding from the government backed Polish Film Institute.
This was the third year after the government began to pump substantial funds into Polish film production and the rise in the level of production standards was evident in an overall increase in the quality of films presented.

Held in the Baltic seaside resort from 15 to 20 September the festival screens all the annual feature film production as well as acting as an annual forum for professionals of the Polish film industry. In a controversial move Czech director Petr Zelenka's Brothers Karamozov, a Czech Polish co-production screened in competition prompting some critics to ask if the Czech language film was really a Polish feature film. Another international element was the inclusion of Slovak director Rudolf Bierman in the main jury. Bierman has participated in a number of Polish Slovak coproductions.

Proving that it was a bumper year three of the films in competition had already screened in major international festivals earlier in the year. Michał Rosa's Scratch (Rysa) screened in Venice, Jerzy Skolimowski's Four Nights with Anna (Cztery noce z Anną) to Jerzy Skolimowski screened in Cannes and Malgorzata Szumowska's 33 Scenes from Life (33 sceny z życia) took home a Silver Leopard from Locarno.

Proving the depth of talent this year a new film by Waldemar Krzystek, Little Moscow (Mała Moskwa) won the main prize for best film this year.
